Waxing vs. Shaving: Keeping the Cat Intact + Ingrown Hair Tips

I am not a licensed esthetician. I am speaking from personal experience and giving advice and tips I’ve taken from licensed professionals.

Learning your body is extremely important. If I can undo the first 8 years of me shaving I would. I got my first wax in 2016 and it’s one of the best things I could have done for my skin. When I shaved, I received SO MANY ingrowns and dark marks! I really became self conscious about my body and people very rarely saw me in a swimsuit. I tried different brightening techniques and serums but none seemed to work (I must admit I wasn’t very consistent).

Shaving is still a decent option for those who don’t want to pay for waxing! Three blade razors are the best for waxing. It is also imporant that you do not use a dull razor. A fresh new clean razor is best to avoid ingrowns. Shower first, exfoliate, and allow the steam from the shower to open up your pores.

Waxing really changed my life. I no longer receive ingrown hairs, my skin feels extremely smooth like a baby’s bottom. My hairs grow back very thin, which is a plus. With waxing, the more you go the less it hurts. Most women go every 4 weeks, but I go every 5 and sometimes 6. This is a plus, because it saves me more money.

The Cost

I then got introduced to waxing and received my first wax at European Wax Center, because it was half-off my first wax (regulaly $55). They are not cheap, but they are so worth it! I’m a college student and I love a deal or coupon! Because of that, I often hop wax salons. I have about 4 or 5 different places I get waxes from, because some may run different deals or specials that month or I may find a groupon occasionally. Some places also may offer student discounts.

Type of waxing

I have only experienced hard wax. I have never received sugaring or waxing strips. Many people tell me that waxing strips is the most painful of the three and that it is not as effective. Hard waxing seems the most effective and sanitary to me.

Aftercare

My aftecare routine for both waxing and shaving includes exfoliating and moisturizing. I exfoliate using my exfoliating gloves found at walmart. Afterwards, I use my tumeric scrub that has brightening properties. After my shower, I use the Smooth ME Ingrown hair serum ($30) by European Wax Center that I love, but you can only puchase instore. Afterwards I moisturize w/ my tea tree oil and lotion.

Ingrown Hair Treatment

So I shared a picture of how my bikini line used to look whenever I shaved. I suffered from skin inflammation, irritation, redness, bumps. It would also sting when I touched it. I’ve been shaving since I was 11 and it definitely left scarring over the years.

To treat scarring I did these steps and used these products:

  1. PFB Vanish Chromabright or Ultra (stronger) (to brighten scars)

  2. Tend skin to treat ingrowns

  3. Warm compresses for inflammation

  4. Tea tree oil & vitamin e serum

  5. Sunscreen to protect scars from darkening
